Efo Riro: The Vegetable Party That’ll Make You Forget About Meat.

Efo Riro is a vegetarian’s dream come true and probably a carnivore’s delightful surprise. This vibrant Nigerian soup is a symphony of colours, textures, and flavours, all brought together by a generous helping of, you guessed it, leafy greens! It is a Yoruba dish originating from the southwestern regions of Nigeria. The name “Efo” itself means “greens” in Yoruba.

Efo Shoko: The Superstar You Can't Ignore

The heart and soul of Efo Riro is the mighty efo shoko, also known as Lagos spinach. These emerald green leaves add a slightly bitter kick that perfectly complements the other ingredients. Think of them as the sassy lead singer of the savour band, keeping things exciting and leaving you wanting more.

Efo Riro isn’t a one-leaf show, oh no. It’s a vegetable party where everyone’s invited. Think plump tomatoes for a touch of sweetness, fiery peppers for a playful heat, and a chorus of other leafy greens like spinach or pumpkin leaves to add depth and body.

A "Swallow" Made in Heaven:

Efo Riro isn’t meant to be enjoyed alone. It’s a social butterfly, best paired with its Nigerian “swallow” counterparts. We’re talking fufu, pounded yam, or eba – all these starchy delights are the perfect canvas for soaking up every last drop of that delicious Efo Riro goodness.

Efo Riro Fun Fact:
  • Depending on the region, you might find variations with meat or fish.
  •  Efo Riro is a staple in many Nigerian households, a comforting and familiar dish that brings families together.
